Why the Next Big Adventure Camera Might Make You Forget It's There

Insta360's new X6 aims to make panoramic cameras effortless—auto-editing, head tracking, and more. Founder Liu Jingkang explains how 'unconscious' recording could redefine how we capture hobbies.

The Camera That Wants You to Forget It

Ten years ago, if you bought a 360-degree camera, you had some explaining to do. The first Insta360 model, the Nano, plugged directly into an iPhone like an oversized accessory, and using it meant wrestling with a clunky workflow: shoot, transfer, stitch, then hunt through a spherical mess to find the two seconds you actually wanted.

Today, the company's X-series has become a fixture on ski helmets, handlebars, and chest mounts. But something shifted with the X5: more than half of all panoramic camera buyers now say they use it not for adrenaline sports but for travel, graduations, weddings, and family life. That's a big deal for a product category that started as a niche tool for action junkies.

Insta360 founder Liu Jingkang has a word for where he wants to take this: unconscious. After a decade of building cameras, his goal is to make one that people forget is even there.

What's New in the X6

The X6 is the company's latest attempt to close that gap between capturing everything and doing nothing with it. The hardware is a step up—a 1/1.1-inch square sensor co-developed with Sony, 33% larger than the X5's, plus a triple-chip architecture with a 4nm Qualcomm processor that's five times faster than last generation. It shoots 8K at 30fps with native Dolby Vision, 10-bit color, and I-Log, all while being smaller and lasting 140 minutes—51% longer than before.

But the real story is software. Insta360 has trained a custom AI model, PanoMind, on over 10,000 hours of footage across 30+ scenarios like cycling, diving, and road trips. The result is an "AI Director" that works while your camera charges. Plug in the X6 after a day out, and it will analyze your footage, pick highlights, add virtual camera moves, and edit a finished video overnight. You wake up to a highlight reel you didn't have to touch.

If you want more control, there's a new "Moment Pro" mode that lets you specify people, scenes, and video length. But the direction is clear: the camera is doing the work.

From 'Shoot Now, Frame Later' to 'Shoot Now, Do Nothing'

Panoramic cameras solved an old problem—you never have to frame a shot before pressing record. That made them perfect for skiing or mountain biking, where you can't pause to compose. But it created a new one: after the action, you still had to edit.

Liu thinks that's the barrier that's kept 360 cameras from going mainstream. "Our mission is recording and sharing, not creation," he says. "Creation is already well-served by traditional cameras. What people really want is to record moments without thinking about it."

The X6 tries to automate the entire pipeline—shoot, select, edit—so that the only thing left is the moment itself. "The user just presses the button and enjoys the moment," Liu says. "That's the qualitative change."

Beyond Panoramic: A Virtual Gimbal and Head Tracking

Not every shot needs a full 360-degree edit. So the X6 includes a first-person head-tracking module, launched alongside Insta360's first gimbal camera, the Luna Ultra. Clip the X6 to your chest, and the camera follows your head movements—look left, it pans left. You get a flat video without ever diving into the spherical footage.

There's also a "Gimbal Mode 2.0" that uses the 360-degree capture to create a virtual gimbal in post. Attach the camera to a selfie stick with a joystick, and you can pan, tilt, zoom, and track subjects, outputting 4K flat video while keeping the full panoramic file for later. The X6 is no longer just a 360 camera; it's trying to be a gimbal camera and an action cam all in one.

The Bigger Mission: Recording, Not Creating

Liu is careful to distinguish between "creation" and "recording." Creation is a conscious act—choosing lenses, settings, and angles. Recording is more passive; it's about capturing life as it happens. "You can't hire a photographer to follow you around every day," he points out. "Recording is never fully satisfied."

That's why Insta360 is chasing the everyday moments—a family trip, a child's first steps, a lazy afternoon with friends. These are high-frequency, emotionally valuable, and underserved by traditional cameras. Liu calls them "the greatest common denominator" of ordinary user needs.

Why the Market Is Bigger Than You Think

When people ask Liu how big the panoramic camera market can really get, he doesn't quote analyst forecasts. "Market size isn't predicted by models," he says. "It depends on how many problems you solve."

He points out that panoramic cameras are still two orders of magnitude away from smartphones in terms of penetration. "There are problems everywhere," he adds. "Problems are the market."

He also shrugs off the idea that hardware is a moat. "Chips and sensors can be copied," he admits. "The real edge is in understanding customer needs earlier, deploying tech sooner, and building organizational habits that keep creating new barriers."

Where Panoramic Cameras Go Next

Looking forward, Liu sees three clear trends. First, resolution will keep climbing—8K isn't enough when the image is spread across 360 degrees. Expect 12K and 16K, though battery and heat constraints mean the camera can't just grow bigger. "We can't make it the size of a coffee cup," he jokes.

Second, AI will get more personal. The current auto-edit is a one-size-fits-all template. Liu envisions a future where the camera learns your taste—what you keep, what you cut, how you like to frame. "That might take two years," he says.

Third, the output might change entirely. Liu showed a demo of 3D spatial reconstruction—not just changing your viewing angle but moving through a captured scene, like a virtual flythrough. "The pain point of panoramic playback is that you can change the angle but not the viewpoint," he explains. "We want to let you move forward, approach an object, even fly around."

That could turn panoramic cameras into wearable devices that preserve a whole place, not just a moment. "Eventually," Liu says, "it's not about video; it's about saving a space."

The Endgame: A Photography Robot (or No Camera at All)

Liu's long-term vision is what he calls a "photography robot"—not a humanoid with a camera, but a system that automatically finds the best angle, composes the shot, and edits the result. Drones are the closest physical form today, but the idea applies to any device that can move and think.

And here's the twist: if AI gets good enough, you might not need a dedicated 360 camera at all. "We could become a software company," Liu muses. "AI might eliminate the need for a panoramic camera entirely."

But he's not worried, because the core human need—to record a real moment that happened, to keep it for later—won't disappear. "That part," he says, "AI can't replace."
